It melts approx. at body temperature and contributes to the emolliency, viscosity and emulsion stability of o/w skin and hair care emulsions and imparts opacity to aqueous surfactant systems. It is also used as a raw material in the synthesis of a wide variety of materials: ethoxylation yields nonionic surfactants, sulfation yields anionic surfactants, and quaternization yields cationic surfactants.
